Fatha is the short vowel mark that produces an 'a' sound after the letter it sits above. It is one of the three short vowels in Arabic and is usually left out in normal, unvocalized text.

A short 'a' sound, like the 'a' in "cat". Written as a small diagonal stroke above the letter.
