Shadda

Shadda indicates that a consonant is doubled (geminated). It can combine with a short vowel mark written above it, for fatha and damma, or below the letter, for kasra.

Doubles the consonant it sits above — the letter is held or pronounced twice as long, similar to the difference between English "a name" and "an name".
